Storm Damage? Tips for Filing Your Claim

After weathering the storm, you feel relief that the storm has finally passed through. But, as you survey your home and see the damage caused by the storm, you start to panic.

Major storms bring heavy winds and rain, often leaving damage and ruin in their paths. In Arkansas, the weather is as unpredictable as it is destructive. Winter storms may not happen regularly but when they do, they tend to leave unsuspecting homeowners with a lot to clean up. Collapsed roofs, power lines, and trees are extremely common due to the heavy, wet snow while high winds can tear your home’s siding.

Figuring out how to start picking up the pieces after a major storm hits your home can be extremely stressful.

Filing an insurance claim is going to be your first step. Although it can be a confusing process, it’s important to file your claim as soon as possible. Exposure to outside elements can increase the amount of damage and, since you’re paying for your insurance coverage, you’ll want to get the value on your claim that you deserve. So, how do you file an insurance claim? Here are a few tips to help get you through the process:

Check your coverage

Each individual’s insurance policy varies greatly, so you want to make sure you double check what your policy does and doesn’t cover. Some insurance policies limit your time to file a storm damage claim, so that’s another reason why you’ll want to be sure to file it on time. Always do your homework and understand what your insurance covers before filing. Understanding your policy allows you to receive the coverage you’re entitled to.

Assess the damage

You’ll need to know the date the storm hit your home as well as the damage that followed. It’s always a good idea to take pictures or maybe even videos of the damage to be able to show as proof. Focus on creating an idea of everything that was damaged and what it will most likely cost to repair or replace. Assessing the damage that was caused by the storm before filing your claim will help relieve some of your stress.

Get multiple estimates

After you’ve assessed the damage, it’s always smart to get multiple estimates for the cost to fix the damage. Be sure the estimates you’re getting are coming from insured licensed contractors, and ask that they give you detailed, written estimates. You’ll need to get a “proof of loss” form from your adjuster because you’ll need it when you’re filing the claim. Also, make sure that you don’t do any large repairs until you hear from your insurance company.
